In early 2022, severe rainfall and flooding across the Blue Mountains caused extensive damage to sections of the Six Foot Track near Nellies Glen, NSW. Large areas of the trail surface were washed away, exposing rock and creating erosion issues, which impacted safe access for walkers. The project focused on trail reconstruction of the damaged sections while also emphasizing environmental rehabilitation in this remote and environmentally sensitive location. These efforts were part of a broader initiative to restore public access and repair infrastructure that was compromised during the flood event.

Director Tom McAlister played a key role in the planning, supervision, and delivery of trail restoration works as part of the environmental rehabilitation efforts along the Six Foot Track. The project faced significant logistical challenges due to limited site access, steep terrain, and environmental constraints. Conventional construction equipment could not access large sections of the trail, necessitating alternative methods for material transport and placement.
Works included:
- Walking trail reconstruction
- Flood damage repair
- Surface restoration
- Erosion control measures
- Material importation and placement
- Drainage improvements
- Timber stair installation
- Environmental site management
Walk-behind tracked dumpers were utilized to transport material into remote sections of the site, while compact excavators were used to shape and rebuild the damaged trail surfaces.

Many sections of the Six Foot Track had been stripped back to exposed rock following the flood event. To facilitate environmental rehabilitation, material had to be transported considerable distances along the walking track using specialized low-impact equipment due to the limited access available. The trail reconstruction project required careful coordination to balance construction activities with environmental protection and public access requirements.

The damaged sections of the Six Foot Track were successfully restored, enhancing accessibility, safety, and long-term resilience against future erosion. The completed trail reconstruction reinstated walking surfaces, repaired flood damage, and contributed to the ongoing management of one of the region's most well-known walking tracks. This project showcases expertise in environmental rehabilitation, remote access construction, walking trail infrastructure, erosion control, and project delivery within sensitive natural environments.
