Broom Control in Hartley: Effective Scotch Broom Eradication Solutions

Dense green bushes and trees in a sunlit forest area.

The project

TMAC Land Management was engaged to assist with the Scotch Broom eradication on a rural property near Hartley, NSW. The infestation had become well established across the site, with dense, mature plants creating significant challenges for vegetation management and impacting the property's long-term land management objectives. Previous attempts at weed control in Hartley using high-volume herbicide spraying had achieved limited success due to the size, density, and maturity of the broom. The client required a practical solution that would provide a higher likelihood of successful control while preparing the site for ongoing property improvement works.

The Solution

Following an assessment of the infestation, TMAC Land Management implemented a cut stump treatment program specifically designed for Scotch Broom eradication, targeting individual broom plants.

Using chainsaws, mature broom plants were cut at ground level before neat glyphosate was immediately applied to the freshly cut stump surface. This method allows herbicide to be directly absorbed into the plant, significantly improving treatment effectiveness compared to broad-scale spraying of mature infestations.

While more labour intensive than conventional spraying methods, the cut stump technique was selected to maximise control outcomes for weed control in Hartley and minimise unnecessary herbicide application across the broader site.

Vegetation material generated during the works was stockpiled into NSW Rural Fire Service compliant burn piles, providing an efficient and environmentally responsible method of managing the resulting biomass as part of effective vegetation management.

The Outcome

The completed works significantly reduced the existing Scotch broom infestation and established favourable conditions for long-term weed control across the property in Hartley. By combining mechanical removal with targeted herbicide application, the project delivered a more effective treatment outcome for Scotch broom eradication than previous broad-scale spraying attempts, while also reducing herbicide use across non-target areas. The client now has a clear pathway to ongoing weed management, pasture improvement, and property restoration, with the treated areas able to be monitored for any future regrowth requiring follow-up control. This project demonstrates TMAC Land Management's ability to develop practical vegetation management solutions tailored to site conditions, weed species, and long-term land management objectives, rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.
