Hydromulching Bathurst: Site Stabilisation and Erosion Control

Hand holding a clump of shredded green and brown fibrous material.

The project

TMAC Land Management was involved in erosion control efforts through hydromulching as part of a site stabilisation and rehabilitation program near Bathurst, NSW. The project aimed to treat exposed and disturbed ground resulting from civil construction activities. The site featured highly erodible granite-derived soils, making rapid site stabilisation essential to minimize erosion risks, reduce sediment movement, and enhance long-term vegetation management for sustainable growth. The objective of the works was to provide immediate erosion protection while establishing resilient vegetation cover that would stabilize the site for many years to come.

The solution

Hydromulch was applied using a Flexterra® Bonded Fibre Matrix (BFM) system combined with fertiliser, seasonal cover crop species, and a carefully selected perennial grass blend to enhance erosion control.

Due to the highly erodible nature of the granite soils, Flexterra® was chosen for its superior erosion protection, excellent moisture retention, and immediate site stabilisation following application. The Bonded Fibre Matrix formed a protective layer over exposed soils, effectively reducing erosion potential while creating favourable conditions for seed germination and plant establishment.

Seasonal cover crop species were incorporated into the application to provide rapid germination and early ground cover during the critical establishment phase, contributing to effective vegetation management. A long-term perennial grass blend was also included to develop a durable vegetation cover capable of delivering ongoing erosion resistance, site stability, and environmental performance well into the future.

This integrated treatment approach provided both short-term and long-term rehabilitation outcomes within a single application, supporting immediate stabilisation while establishing a sustainable vegetation community.

the outcome

The completed hydromulching works provided immediate erosion control for exposed soils while establishing the foundation for long-term vegetation management across the site.

By combining Flexterra® Bonded Fibre Matrix technology, fertiliser, seasonal cover crops, and perennial grass species, the treatment effectively enhanced site stabilisation, improved moisture retention, and promoted vegetation establishment across disturbed areas. The resulting vegetation cover will continue to strengthen over time, ensuring long-term site stability and reducing the risk of erosion and sediment movement.

This project showcases the effectiveness of hydromulching as a tool for rehabilitation and site stabilisation, particularly on highly erodible granite-derived soils where rapid ground cover establishment and long-term vegetation performance are crucial for achieving successful environmental outcomes.
